Diploma Framing in 2026: What It Costs and How to Choose Wisely
June 18, 2026 · 6 min read

Two years ago a customer walked into the shop holding a diploma that did not look well. The gold frame had cracked, the paper inside had turned a cloudy yellow, and faint brown stains had crept along the edges of the certificate.
He had bought the frame at a department store because it cost almost half of a proper frame shop. For the first two years it looked fine. By the third year, sitting near a window with some sunlight, everything began to change.
What the cheap frame really did
Those brown stains along the paper are what framers call mat burn. They come from a backing board that still carries acid. The acid slowly eats the paper of the certificate until permanent brown marks appear, and once they form there is no way to remove them.
A good mat board is made from cotton rag or alpha cellulose, processed to be 100 percent acid free, with a slightly alkaline pH of 2 to 3 percent so it also absorbs acid drifting in from the air. This grade is called conservation grade, and it is the reason cheap frames skip it.

Glass matters more than you think
Ordinary glass blocks only 45 percent of UV, while conservation grade glass blocks 99 percent. But research shows UV causes only 40 percent of fading. The other 60 percent comes from visible light, heat, humidity and the chemistry of the materials around the artwork, so the whole build has to be right, not just the glass.
Three price tiers and what you actually get
Basic, 650 to 1,200 THB: faux wood or plastic with ordinary glass. Looks good at first, lasts 2 to 4 years near light before it shows. Fine for temporary pieces.
Mid range, 1,500 to 2,800 THB: real wood or quality resin, 99 percent UV glass and conservation grade matting. The extra few hundred baht buys you 10 to 30 years of bright, protected paper.
Premium, 3,500 THB and up: carved Louis frames, museum grade glass that reflects less than 1 percent, and multi layer matting.

What to ask before you order
Ask whether the mat board is conservation grade and how much UV the glass blocks. A shop that answers clearly knows what it is doing. For a diploma you will hang for decades, spending 500 to 1,000 THB more on better materials is worth it.
